Report: Wife of Singapore’s founding leader in serious condition after brain hemorrhage
SINGAPORE - The wife of Singapore’s founding leader Lee Kuan Yew was in serious condition after suffering a brain hemorrhage, a local television station reported Thursday.
Lee’s wife, Kwa Geok Choo, 87, suffered sudden weakness on her left side and slurring of speech on Monday, broadcaster Channel NewsAsia said.
Kwa was taken to the National Neuroscience Institute for a brain scan that showed “massive right intracerebral hemorrhage,” or bleeding in the brain, the report said.
She was then admitted to the neuro-intensive care unit at a local hospital where her hemorrhage stabilized after two days of close monitoring and treatment.
Kwa, Lee’s wife for more than half a century, remains in serious condition but is able to recognize immediate family members, the report said. Her son, Lee Hsien Loong, is prime minister.
The report cited a statement from the elder Lee’s office, which could not immediately be reached for comment.
Lee Kuan Yew stepped down as prime minister in 1990 but remains influential under the title of minister mentor.
God Bless, Mrs Lee
