434 Member’s Email Addresses Leaked From People’s Association

Yesterday, as usual, I checked my mail after I came home from outside. I saw a strange mail from someone I don’t know. The sender is “Yan Juan HUANG” and subject is “15 to 35 years old {Assion card member as at 23.08.2008“. Yes, there is a typing error in the subject.

Initially I thought it is a spam mail, and was thinking to just dump it into Junk folder. But out of curiosity, I opened up the mail to read. The content was EMPTY. Strange huh? Then I want to know who this Yan Juan HUANG is, so I expand to check the mail details. So I saw actually it is someone from People’s Association. And to my horror, I saw a whole list of recipients’ email addresses, all in the “to” column! And the list was freaking long! (Check below)
PA leaked email address
I counted the number of email addresses in the list, all together there are 434. I was puzzled what was actually going on?

I then saw another email from “ccmc” with subject “Youth Revolution - Free Style (Hip Hop Competition)“. Do read it yourself below:

It is from ccmc@tpchangkat.org, but signed by “Huang YanJuan, Deputy Constituency Manager
Tampines Changkat Community Club”. what is the mail about? A “Freestyle Hip Hop Competition” targeted at youths aged between 15-35 years old. And, the mail, even with “undisclosed-recipients”, it was sent to “PAssion Card Member”. What is PAssion Card? It is the People’s Association Card!

Is it clear to you know? Some want to email to PA card members aged between 15 to 35 years old. So she go into PA’s system and retrieve all the email addresses of members aged between 15 and 35 years old. Then she was thinking to send the list back to herself, or from her email account with People’s Association to her email account with Changkat CC (strangely, there is no website for Changkat CC, when you visit www.tpchangkat.org, you will just come to page said “This domain is parked by SingaporeWebHosting.com”). However, she pasted the whole list of the members’ email addresses into the “to” column and “SEND”. Yeah, she got the list, so are EVERYONE IN THE LIST!

I am not sure. Is this just being careless? Or because the lack of IT knowledge? Can we, whose email addresses have been leaked out, can anything? Or demand anything from PA? Is this considered a violation of privacy?

Well, I guess it is just another “honest mistake” again. And, it has already happened, what to do? Let’s move on. I just like this phrases, so useful, the guy who first said it to the public is just brilliant.

The following are interesting as well:
