Yasmin Ahmad Compares Releasing Her Film In Singapore And Malaysia

Yasmin Ahmad is one of the Malaysian movie directors who I like. Her movies always touch me. Also, I like the series of TV commercials she directed for Petronas very much. Recently, she was invited by Singapore government for a TV commercial titled “Family“.

Recently, she was criticized for not showing her movies in Malaysia before Singapore by a local newspaper. Hence she wrote an article in her blog to explain the situation that she is facing. I agree with her, especially on the point regarding piracy. It is a truth that movies face much higher risk of piracy in Malaysia than in Singapore. Most of the time, a movie released in Malaysia in the afternoon, people can buy the pirated copy from street seller at the very same night. This is how “efficient” the piracy industry in Malaysia is.

“I’m not disloyal, my dear fellow Malaysians. I’m just a victim of circumstance.”, very true.

What the Singaporeans will see.
