DOLAKHA, Jan 20 – In an astounding medical case, a baby with four legs and four hands was born at Betali VDC in Ramechhap district.
Januka Ghimire, 30-year-old wife of Rishi Prasad Ghimire, gave birth to the as-yet unnamed baby yesterday at 4 pm. Such case is very rare in the country’s medical history.
According to villagers, the baby’s condition is stable and her mother is in good health. A local, Ram Bahadur Bhujel, said Januka’s house is thronged by people from far-flung villages to have the glimpse of the strange baby.
Some locals even believe that she was the reincarnation of the eight-limbed Hindu goddess of wealth and fortune Lakshmi.
It is suspected that the deformities due to the incomplete growth of foetus resulted in this kind of birth. Had the woman undergone proper medical checkups after she became pregnant, health workers could have detected such abnormal feotus, Bhujel added.
The mortality rate among babies with such severe deformities is still considered high in rural parts of the country where access to health services is poor.
