BERLIN: German doctors have successfully removed an 18-kilogram cancerous tumor from a Saudi woman patient, leaving her weighing only 37 kilograms as she goes into rehabilitation.
Capital Health Hospital Group, a Berlin clinic operator, said yesterday it believed the chondrosarcoma, a tumor growing in the bone of the pelvis, was the biggest ever taken from a patient. It had amounted to almost one third of her body weight.
The doctors first shrunk it with chemotherapy, then gradually cut it out in a series of five operations. The woman will now need reconstruction of her pelvis. Her cancer was first diagnosed in Saudi Arabia in 2003.
The mother of three rejected a proposal by Saudi doctors to amputate the right side of her pelvis and her right leg and was instead flown to Berlin where her treatment began last September. Last summer the tumor was so advanced that she could neither walk nor stand up. In some places the tumor had burst outward through her skin. It risked blocking her colon.
Chondrosarcomas are malignant bone cancers that usually begin near the hip joint in adults aged 30 to 50. Long-term survival is closely related to the proportion of malignant cells remaining in the body.

It was set up in memory of the former England captain, who died from the disease in 1993, aged only 51.
Bowel cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK.
It’s estimated that 44 people die from it each day.

The schoolgirl was seen kneeing, slapping and stamping on stunned springer spaniel Jasper in the 13-minute film.
She whipped him with his lead, then stood on his tail with one leg while kicking him with the other.
The girl is seen kicking the pup 14 times, kneeing it 26 times and hitting it with its lead eight times. She slaps it 17 times and stamps on it ten times.
Last night Jasper’s owner Ray Green, in his 60s, choked back tears after seeing the horrific film. Mr Green, who uses a mobility scooter, had let the girl — the daughter of a close pal — take the 18-month-old dog for walks.

A 57-year-old woman is alive today because her bra stopped a bullet from killing her Tuesday when men breaking into a neighbor’s home shot her, Detroit police said.
The woman lives on Huntington Street near Outer Drive on the city’s west side. She saw male teenagers breaking into her neighbor’s house Tuesday morning and when they saw her, one of them fired a shot, police said.
Police said the underwire of the bra deflected the bullet, but that the woman was injured. She was taken to an area hospital, but released by the afternoon, according to WWJ-AM (950). Police said the injury was not life-threatening.
” Isn’t that amazing,” Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens Bell said of the deflection. “We need to get some bullet-proof vests made from that. It is some strong wire.”

A Japanese pop star has been arrested for public indecency after being found drunk and naked at a park in Tokyo, police have said.
Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, of the boyband SMAP, was found alone and “shrieking at the top of his voice” in the early hours of Thursday, according to media reports.
The Kyodo news agency reported that the 34-year-old asked a police officer: “What’s wrong with being naked?”
Kusanagi’s agents apologised “for the trouble and worry caused to everyone”.
