She is Over 45, She Is Jobless, Please Help Her.
I feel sad for this Sofie in the story. Does age discrimination exists in Singapore? I am not sure and I shall not say it here what I think about this.
Other than asking helps from various parties, I think sometimes it is about her expectations of job title, area and salary. It is already a fact that if you are over 40 and out of job, it is very difficult to get re-hired in Singapore, no matter how experienced you are in your previous job. One either accepts jobs with lower requirements, lower rank, lower pay, or turn into freelance/self-employed job, like cab drivers, insurance or properties agents.
I myself have been through a period of time of being jobless, quite a long one. So I can understand the kind of desperate, helpless, hopeless feeling she had deep inside. Moreover, her situation is much worse than what I have gone through few years back, it must be a very very hard time for her. She must be really out of idea on what and how she can do to help herself, that’s why she wrote into STOMP. Maybe someone should talk to her, to lower down her expectation or grab whatever come across her 1st, you know, those jobs that don’t require “resume”.
I wish her luck, and I hope some kind heart souled here can lend her a helping hand.
