Tibet riots lead to block on YouTube
China cuts off YouTube and Google News

Dan Nystedt

Beijing appears to have taken a page out of Myanmar’s playbook by blocking some internet access amid rioting in Tibet that has already seen as many as 80 people killed, according to the Tibetan government in exile.

China has blocked access to Google News and YouTube in an apparent attempt to stop the spread of video footage related the rioting going on in several cities in Tibet, including the capital Lhasa. Demonstrations in the city started on March 10, a day commemorating the anniversary of a 1959 uprising against Chinese rule after which the spiritual leader of the country, the Dalai Lama, fled to India.

China has said the Dalai Lama is to blame for rioting in the country, and puts the civilian death toll at 13, while adding that police and security forces have also suffered casualties.

The Dalai Lama has denied involvement in the rioting, and said he has “no such power to stop it”, in a video of a recent news conference posted on his website.

“Whether the Chinese government admits it or not, there is a problem,” he said “The Tibetan nation, an ancient nation with an ancient cultural heritage, is actually dying.”

China’s decision to block access to the sites follows similar government censorship of protests by Myanmar. Last September, Myanmar cut off internet access entirely to block people from viewing pictures and videos or sending them out of the country. Some analysts at the time said the protests likely spread through the help of the web, in addition to winning global condemnation of the violent crackdown on protesters there.

Two videos about the situations in Tibet posted on YouTube by the user Amdo2007 both appear to show peaceful demonstrations. The first shows a public gathering, including Tibetan monks in their distinctive saffron robes, while the second video shows what appears to be peaceful marching.

Some videos, including one from Amdo2007, have been “flagged by YouTube’s user community” so that users have to verify they are 18 or older by logging in or signing up. The video shows bodies on the streets, protesters throwing rocks at Chinese army vehicles and other images. It may have the most hits, over 80,000 so far, on the subject.

Chinese media and international media have shown footage of buildings burning and crowds damaging store-fronts. Some stations, such as the BBC, picked up photos and other contributions from tourists in Tibet.

Foreign media have been banned from Tibet, according to a CNN video, which says the station has not been able to send a team to report the news. China’s own press is run by the state.

Some Stupid Idiots Never Use Brain – Ericsson Giving Out Free Laptop?

Got a forwarded chained mail from someone. The content:

Hello everyone!

The Ericsson Company is distributing free computer lap tops in an attempt
to match what Nokia has already done.

Ericsson hopes to increase its popularity this way. For this reason, they
are giving away the WAP Laptops. All you need to qualify is to send this
email to 8 people you know. Within 2 weeks, you will receive Ericsson T18.
But if you can send it to 20 people or more, you will receive Ericsson
R320.

Make sure you send a copy to: xxxxxxx@ericsson.com

Best Regards

Stupidity is really no cure one. Ericsson long time gone case already, became Sony Ericsson. And they never sell LAPTOP, they sell CELLPHONE! T18 was a model released donkey years ago, super old old model. Now I think they gave you free you also don’t want.

I saw the date of forwarding and precious forwarding, all are within 2008, and all really follow instruction, that is, forwarding to at least 8 persons, some even more than 20! Come one, is this being stupid or being desperate? Or a combination of being both?

Sorry, if you have forwarded similar emails lately. I am not talking about you.

Questions To Advertlets

I believe a blog post will get me faster reply then an email to info@advertlets.com. Yes, I did send an email last Tuesday regarding 1 of my questions below, and no reply yet.

1. One of my readers from China was actually asking if he is eligible to be a member of Advertlets. He has a blog in Chinese. (I did not go and read all the T&C) I am asking on his behalf, so anyone who knows about this can reply, thanks.

2. I understand that there is a terms from Google AdSense which saying that publishers cannot, in any form, encourage their reader to click on the AdSense ads in their site. I am wondering if Advertlets has similar terms also? The reason being, recently I have came across some blogs with Advertlets ads, and having some “encouraging sentences” just on top of the ads. If there is such terms from Advertlets and the bloggers do not know about it, then maybe Advertlets should inform them to correct it.

Photobucket
This is one blog that I came across. The words on top means “Clicking the advertisement helps you lose calories, and earn money”. (I will come back to the “empty content” in Question 3)
Photobucket
This is another one. The sentence means “I tell you to click!”.

3. Recently, very often I see the Advertlets 336 X 280 Banner ad being empty, blank. I notice it in my blog, I notice it in others’ blog also. It is not constant, but frequent. Examples from my blog:
Photobucket Using FF
Photobucket Using IE7
I am wondering if there is anything that need to be done at Advertlets server site?

4. Just checking, my CPM dropped drastically since 14th March. For the first 2 days I saw no advertiser ads but Advertlets’ own ads. After that, I only see the Recruit.Net and Free Rice ad, and sometimes Advertlets’ own ads. There is no more new advertisers? From Advertlets homepage, I saw that they have advertisers like Toyota, Digi, Mediaprima, but I hardly see them nowadays.

I just want to sort out some doubts. I will still support Advertlets becuase it did earn me so good money during the Edison Chen scandals period, kekeke. By the way, hope Advertlets can process my check faster though I only cash out early this month.

Google AdSense Testing New Ads On Jialat dot Com?

Maybe I am rather slow but this is the 1st time I noticed this kind of manual-rotating AdSense (we, I don’t know how to call it). Is this a new form of AdSense that we will see in near future?

Some screenshots here

Photobucket
It looks like this. Notice the UP/DOWN Arrows at the left bottom.

Photobucket
Upon click on the arrow.

Photobucket
The contents changed. Another 4 sets of ads appeared.

At the same time, I opened the same page on Jialat dot Com. The usual style was shown.

How To Sell Your Self-Composed Songs Online?

Do the Drupré way that is! Truth is, either you are god damn talented and people just love your works so so so much or you do some stunts or scandals like what Ashley Alexandra Drupré did. And either your works bring fame to yourself eventually or your “popularity” helps sells your works. For Ashley Alexandra Drupré, and her songs “Move Ya Body” and “What We Want”, it is the latter I guess. I never listen to this 2 songs so I could not comment on them. But, yes, she for sure moves her body a lots, and what she wants? Money? Fame? She’s got both now!

Click HERE to purchase Ashley Alexandra Drupré’s songs, “Move Ya Body” and “What We Want”. By the way, she looks sexy in the photo.

Got Advertlets, Got FACES

Yeah, if you got Advertlets ads, you got faces! Kekeke, joking lah. I am referring to a contest for all Singapore and Malaysia Advertlets bloggers offer by FACES. What is FACES? Seriously I am not very familiar with it. Think I only came across the magazine once or twice one or two years back. But thanks to Advertlets, I get to know more about FACES now. From FACES homepage, I saw that there are sections about music, IT, travel, movies, and ect. I like watching movies, think I have got 1 more sources to get some latest movie reviews now.

So, what is the contest about? You can go HERE to take a look. Basically, register yourself as FACES member if you are not. Then go back to the page, select the freebies that you like, fill your blog’s URL into the entry form. Actually I am getting a bit confused also. Josh said there are 6 contests for us Advertlets bloggers, can choose from any of the 6 freebies, but on that page, it only said the Starbucks freebies are reserved for Advertlets bloggers, not the others. But anyway, I want the Starbucks, so no difference.

So, what is the virtues of Starbucks? To me, it is none other than providing a comfortable venue with relaxed ambience. I have to say that besides selling great coffees, latte, mocha and tasty pastries, it is the environment that keeps the customers there. Imagine in the afternoon, under the burning hot sun, you walk into any Starbucks outlet, order your favourite mocha (and pastry if you want some), just relax on the sofa at one corner, enjoy the aircon and soothing music. You can either read your favourite books (of course you bring your own lah) or surfing Internet, chatting over MSN, or blogging, with your laptop (of course you bring your own laptop there also…, ok PDA, Blackberry, Ipod Touch also can…). What a way to kill your afternoon right?

Then, how Starbucks outlets can improve? If I am not wrong, I think there are already albums under Starbucks’ label sold in Starbucks outlets in America. What I am thinking is relevant to music also, but further than that. I want live music! Starbucks can set up a small stage in some of those more spacious outlets, then invite some live band, or performers to perform. It can be Jazz, or Bosanova, Acapella, or anything nice. Anything that is great for a hot afternoon or romantic evening. Also, Starbucks can even encourage their staffs, who are talented, and willing to share, to perform on stage also. This is a way to build up their self confidence also. In a way, Starbucks is grooming their future leaders, who knows, right?

Yeah, I think I have written a bit too much. So, would you like some FACES or a cup of Starbucks coffee?

Edison Sex Scandals Photos – Video Clips Sold In Japan

I doubt this is the real video clips of his scandals. OK, the gossips reported that there are people in Japan digged out some “indecent” video clips of Edison Chen, made it into disc and had very nice labels printed. Photos of “stars” involved in the scandals are printed on the labels. There are 4 clips in the disc. The female lead actress in one of the four, dressed like the lead character in “Agent J” MTV (Jolin Tsai lah).

Doraemon, Japan’s New Ambassador

Yes, good move! I believe Doraemon has brought sweet memories to milions or billions of kids, and that includes me. I still remembered the days I could just read and read and read Doraemon comic non-stop. Every week I would borrow the comics to read. I think, many of us who grew up with Doraemon’s companion did ever wish to have a real Doraemon to be our guardian, didn’t we? At least, I did.

Japan’s new ambassador: a cartoon cat

TOKYO (AFP) — Japan’s newest ambassador might be among the most listened to in the diplomatic corps, even if he has no ears himself.

The foreign ministry announced Friday it was appointing the cartoon cat Doraemon as the nation’s first “anime ambassador,” in Japan’s latest effort to promote its soft power through its animation industry.

Doraemon — or at least a person dressed as the earless, blue-and-white cat — will receive his official assignment letter from Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura in a ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, officials said.

The character will appear in films to be shown in Japanese missions overseas, talking about the country’s lifestyle and customs.

“By appointing Doraemon, we hope people in other countries will understand Japanese anime better and deepen their interest in Japanese culture,” said Yuko Hotta, a foreign ministry official.

Created by a cartoonist under the penname Fujiko F. Fujio, Doraemon is the main character in an animation series that is among the most popular in Japan and widely known in much of Asia.

The friendly cat travels back to the present from the 22nd century to help out a schoolboy by lending an “anywhere door,” which allows people to travel wherever they please.

The government has been trying to turn growing worldwide interest in its anime cartoons, manga comics and cuisine into political capital with a campaign promoting “Cool Japan.”

Last year, Japan launched the International Manga Award for foreign artists. The first winner was Hong Kong’s Lee Chi Ching.
