Sun Microsystems Announces Agreement to Acquire MySQL, Developer of the World’s Most Popular Open Source Database

Sun Growth Strategy Accelerates With New Position in $15 Billion Database Market
SANTA CLARA, CA January 16, 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire MySQL AB, an open source icon and developer of one of the world’s fastest growing open source databases for approximately $1 billion in total consideration. The acquisition accelerates Sun’s position in enterprise IT to now include the $15 billion database market. Today’s announcement reaffirms Sun’s position as the leading provider of platforms for the Web economy and its role as the largest commercial open source contributor.

With millions of global deployments including Facebook, Google, Nokia, Baidu and China Mobile, MySQL will bring synergies to Sun that will change the landscape of the software industry by driving new adoption of MySQL’s open source database in more traditional applications and enterprises. The integration with Sun will greatly extend the commercial appeal of MySQL’s offerings and improve its value proposition with the addition of Sun’s global services organization. MySQL will also gain new distribution through Sun’s channels including its OEM relationships with Intel, IBM and Dell.

MySQL’s open source database is widely deployed across all major operating systems, hardware vendors, geographies, industries and application types. The complementary product line-ups will extend MySQL’s database reach and are expected to bring new markets for Sun’s systems, virtualization, middleware and storage platforms.

MySQL’s open source database is the “M” in LAMP – the software platform comprised of Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP/Perl often viewed as the foundation of the Internet. More than 100 million copies of MySQL’s high-performance open source database software have been downloaded and distributed and an additional 50,000 copies are downloaded daily. Following completion of the proposed transaction, MySQL will be integrated into Sun’s Software, Sales and Service organizations and the company’s CEO, Marten Mickos, will be joining Sun’s senior executive leadership team. In the interim, a joint team with representatives from both companies will develop integration plans that build upon the technical, product and cultural synergies and the best business and product development practices of both companies. MySQL is headquartered in Cupertino, CA and Uppsala, Sweden and has 400 employees in 25 countries.

As part of the transaction, Sun will pay approximately $800 million in cash in exchange for all MySQL stock and assume approximately $200 million in options. The transaction is expected to close in late Q3 or early Q4 of Sun’s fiscal 2008. Completion of the transaction is subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. The deal is expected to be accretive to FY10 operating income on a GAAP basis.

Neither Democrats nor Republicans best in bed: Playboy survey

Republicans and Democrats may be dominating the US presidential race, but when it comes to the bedroom, it is independents who have better sex, according to Playboy magazine’s Politics of Sex survey.

More than 45 percent of those questioned said independents were better in the sack, against 36 percent who thought Democrats were the best lovers and just over 18 percent who rated Republicans as the real Don Juans.

However, more Republicans had sex at least once a week — 55 percent against only 43 percent of Democrats — according to the magazine’s February edition, which questioned 900 adults aged between 18- and 64-years-old.

The survey also found that Michelle Obama, the wife of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama, was considered by almost one in five respondents as the sexiest woman in politics.

She was followed by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, with 17.5 percent, first lady Laura Bush on 16.3 percent and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton with 14 percent.

Among former presidents, Bill Clinton emerged as the sexiest former US leader, beating Ronald Reagan by 58.8 percent to 21.7

Playboy magazine is releasing a risque poll in its February issue, comparing voting habits and intimacy.

Pollster Frank Luntz took a nationwide poll on the “Politics of Sex” and found the most intimate of personal issues were united among Americans.

“We all kind of behave the same way, just vote in different ways and this emphasis on values probably is misplaced,” said Chris Napolitano of Playboy magazine.

The survey shows that more people under 40 have sex at least once a week than vote for a president once every four years.

According to the poll, 55 percent of Republicans have sex at least once a week compared with 43 percent of Democrats.

The survey also asked Americans who they thought was the sexiest president of the past 40 years. Bill Clinton won with 58 percent, followed by Ronald Reagan with 22 percent.

Other findings in the survey include:

# 25 percent of Republicans of 35 percent of Democrats have had more than 10 sexual partners in their lifetime.

# 14 percent of Fred Thompson supporters and 12 percent of Barack Obama supporters claim to have sex “almost every day.” Five percent of Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani supporters have sex that frequently.

# Americans of both parties say they are more turned on by intelligence than by physical appearance.

CANBERRA (Reuters) – An Australian man who waved out of a car window at two young women was expected to lose his arm on Monday after it was almost severed by another passing vehicle.

The 20-year-old was a passenger in a pick-up truck at Bunbury, in Western Australia state, when he waved at two women in a car wash.

But as he put his arm out the driver made a right hand turn and the man’s limb was struck and almost torn off by an oncoming four-wheel-drive.

“His left arm was partially severed and doctors believe the limb may need to be amputated,” police said.

Swedish feminists win partial approval for topless swimming

Stockholm – Swedish feminists have secured the right to drop their tops at an indoor swimming pool in northern Sweden, a newspaper report said Wednesday. “We are used to naked people. The only condition is that other guests are not offended, in that case we will have to ask the women to leave,” Per-Erik Ulander, head of the municipal swimming pool in Sundsvall, north of Stockholm told the Dagbladet newspaper.

Activists have since September challenged the ban against swimming topless and formed a network that has staged several protests.

The actions started after two young women were ordered to leave the public swimming hall in the city of Uppsala when swimming topless.

The Equal Opportunities Ombudsman, the watchdog in charge of ensuring equal opportunity between men and women, has said it would not review a complaint filed over alleged discrimination.

On their website the network – called Bara Brost, which translates as “bare breasts” or “just breasts” – said their aim was to liberate women from being treated as “sexual objects” and that women should be able to decide when it is suitable to drop their tops – or not.

Officials of municipal swimming halls have cited hygiene rules and that other guests may be offended as reasons for upholding the rule that female guests should wear a bikini top or regular swim suit in the pool or pool area.

Everything worn by the celebrities there, including the men’s shoes as well as their handbags and sunglasses are more than enough to inspire one on leaving for shopping immediately to get another new dress & shoes.

Today is the day, if I remember correctly.

And, my conclusion is, basically no damage to me even if I am not in the club.

No, I am not a fanboy of advetlets, not before, even not after their saga. It’s just that, since day 1, my earning from nuffnang has been pathetic. Yes, I know that, most likely is because the style of my other blog is not suitable for the ads, the advertiser, or not good enough, sucks. Since I am not going to change my style, so I change the ads networks.

Yes, I am out. And from today onwards, I cannot use the innit already. Fortunately, I still have ping.sg. And maybe I should register this blog with Blog2U.sg also. I am not any big time blogger who always got ads from nuffnang and can earn 4 digits amount from them. So I can only look for all this ikan bilis. I really do not mind having thousands of ikan bilis……

There is news reports saying that Jet Li bought a condo at Armour Park and migrated to Singapore with his family – his wife, and 2 daughters. He is attracted by Singapore’s famous and successful education systems.

I wonder, his daughters will be studying in local schools or those international schools? Maybe one day when you are shopping at Orchard Road, you will see Jet and his wife 利智 also jalan jalan there at Taka?
