KUALA LUMPUR: Every married person knows it, but a local study has confirmed it – mothers-in-law are the chief cause of divorces, especially in the Indian community.
Data in the Malaysia Community and Family Study 2004 by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) revealed that “meddlesome in-laws” is the number one reason why Indian couples get divorced.
It is also among the top three factors for divorce among the Malays and Chinese. The other two factors are incompatibility (42.3%) and infidelity (12%).
“Interference by in-laws is the main reason for Indians to divorce. It is the top-ranked reason at 30%,” said LPPKN director-general Datuk Aminah Abdul Rahman when presenting a paper on Malaysia’s family profile and its effects at Institut Kefahaman Islam Malaysia yesterday.

A French policeman has been charged with “a barbarous act of torture and mutilation” after he lopped off his wife’s lover’s genitals with a box cutter, Strasbourg prosecutors said on Monday.
The 43-year-old father-of-five faces a maximum of 30 years in jail and is on suicide watch after handing himself in to his colleagues following Saturday’s attack, according to officials involved in the inquiry.
According to prosecutors, the gendarme went over to his wife’s lover’s house in the eastern town of Reichshoffen, knocked the 54-year-old senseless, dragged him into his garage and emasculated him.
The policeman told neighbours to call an ambulance then surrendered himself to fellow officers. An initial psychiatric report concluded that he acted in cold blood, and recommended that he be detained in a psychiatric facility.

A woman has severed her boyfriend’s penis with a kitchen knife after accusing him of raping her daughter.
Maria da Silva allegedly attacked 42-year-old Isaias Saturnino while he was sleeping at their home in north-eastern Brazil.
She then fled the scene and remains on the run, police said.
Saturnino underwent reconstructive surgery and was said to be in good condition, but is expected to stay at least two months in the hospital for observation.
Police official Fabio Gaudencio said Silva’s daughter, now a teenager, accused Saturnino of raping her from the age of seven.

A Russian woman got so upset by the news that her boyfriend intended to leave her that she tied several firecrackers to his penis and exploded them, the Life.ru web-site reports.
The 33-year-old victim, identified as Alik D. had lived with the woman whose name was reported as Kira V. for about two years, but when the girlfriend started suggesting that they should marry, the man refused and said that he would rather return to his first wife with whom he had a son.
When Alik started moving out Kira suggested that they had a farewell dinner. After a hearty meal and some heavy drinking Alik fell asleep. The girlfriend tied several firecrackers to Alik’s penis and exploded them. The man was rushed to intensive care and doctors are reported to be fighting for his life.
Even if the man survives the girl will face up to 12 years imprisonment.

“Drop” is the latest book by Koji Suzuki, the author of the famous horror story “Ring”.
TOKYO – In a country where ghosts are traditionally believed to hide in the loo, a Japanese company is advertising a new literary experience — a horror story printed on toilet paper.
Each roll carries several copies of a new nine-chapter novella written by Koji Suzuki, the Japanese author of the horror story “Ring,” which has been made into movies in both Japan and Hollywood.
“Drop,” set in a public restroom, takes up about three feet (90 centimeters) of a roll and can be read in just a few minutes, according to the manufacturer, Hayashi Paper.
The company promotes the toilet paper, which will sell for 210 yen ($2.20) a roll, as “a horror experience in the toilet.”
Toilets in Japan were traditionally tucked away in a dark corner of the house due to religious beliefs. Parents would tease children that a hairy hand might pull them down into the dark pool below.

A Pierce County mother says she’s horrified by a cartoon video – posted online – that showed several ways to kill her sixth grade daughter. The cartoon was made off school grounds by some of her daughter’s classmates, girls aged 11 and 12. Titled “Top Six Ways to Kill Piper,” it includes depictions of girls shooting her, making her commit suicide, poisoning her and even pushing her off a cliff.

He has become as much a part of the Playboy brand as its trademark bunny ears.
But Hugh Hefner could soon be parting ways with the soft-porn empire he founded more than 56 years ago.
The 83-year-old is reported to be selling the company for nearly £200million, with Virgin tipped as a potential buyer.
Although the magazine was read by a quarter of all university students in its heyday in the 1970s, its circulation has taken a battering from the availability of free pornography on the internet.
Earlier this month, Playboy announced it had made losses of £8.6million for the first three months of this year, compared to a £2.6million loss for the corresponding period in 2008.
The company is said to have been furiously cutting costs and has reportedly sacked 25 per cent of its staff.
