Clinton, Are You Sure?

Mr Clinton, did you really mean what you say? Are you just being diplomatic?

“Malaysia is the model that there is hope for the future. The people here who are from varied races, religions and all sorts of background who have learned to work together and stay together.

“It is this ability to respect people’s faith that I admire in Malaysia. If only everyone could look another person in their eye and welcome them to their common space, what a different world we would have.”

Bill Clinton Coming To Malaysia

He will give a talk on 6th Dec.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former US president Bill Clinton will make his first trip to Malaysia to deliver the inaugural BC Sekhar memorial lecture on Dec 6.

And the good news is the lecture is open to the public, not just politicians and business leaders.

Petra Group founder Datuk Vinod Sekhar, who had invited Clinton to Malaysia, said any interested member of the public who wants to hear the lecture would be able to do so.

Wondering how much does he receive for this talk?

Dr Chua Soi Lek’s reply to his sex tape scandal in his blog

Yes, Dr Chua Soi Lek has a blog, in Blogspot. It was started in March. Most of the post are written in English.

I believe since the news of “Dr Chua Soi Lek has a blog” spread out, many have gone there to take a look, and questioned him in regards to his sex tape issue. So, he has this “In reply to sex dvd comments” today.

In reply to sex dvd comments

Regarding the sex dvd matter that was raised quite frequently in my blog, I say that I have the moral courage to admit and apologize and within 48 hours, I have resigned from all government and party posts. While I stand to be judged on my private life, nobody seems to be concern at who is the person behind this tape to character assassinate me.

Since my family accepted my apology, I will continue to move on. I do not claim to be perfect, at least I choose not to behave by saying although I was advised by my lawyers “It looks like me, it sounds like me but its not me”. The rest of other humours are false that it is continued by my “friends” to assassinate me.

I was deeply encouraged by a survey done by a local magazine in Labis where they went down to interview voters on the dvd issue. Majority think that it was a personal matter that involves me and my family more than the public. During the election when my son contested for the Labis constituency, this issue was not raised at all.

One of the leading opposition leaders who went to jail purportedly on sodomy and corruption is today hailed as a reformist in the country. I think majority of rakyat of Malaysia think he was a victim of character assassination. So friend, we make mistakes but life has to move on.

As I’ve said before, I will continue to move on and you are entitled to your judgement.

I do agree that he should not be judged based on his personal/sexual life. Bill Clinton is still one of the best recent US Presidents, regardless his relationship with Monica Lewinsky. But too bad Dr Chua, this is Southeast Asia not US. People judge you based on your moral behaviour, not your achievements.

Would You Mind a Minister With Sex Scandal? Mr Baey Wouldn’t Mind

I am referring to Mr Baey Yam Keng’s blog article in P65 blog site. Mr Baey is the MP of Tanjong Pagar GRC. To be honest, to certain extents, I agree Mr Baey’s view. It is his/her capability that matters to me. As long as he/she doesn’t cheat, doesn’t take advantage through his/her position or power, I am fine with it. I do not need a saint. Bill Clinton’s scandal with Lewinsky is an issue big enough, but he is still regarded by many as one of the most successful US President. During his time, US economy has been great.

What’s your view then?

Sex video scandal in Singapore?
January 13th, 2008

We were chatting at a cocktail reception when a Minister asked a hypothetical question: if the recent sex video scandal involving a Malaysian Minister were to happen in S’pore, would the person have to resign too?

A female fellow MP said in strong affirmation that the public would not accept it and would demand his/her resignation.

Personally, I am not too sure that it would be the case. I would look at what the person has done as a Minister and MP. If he or she is doing the job well, I would not really mind. This is afterall their private life and it is unfortunate that it became public. I do not expect them to be saints and for this matter, it is a betrayal of faith with the spouse and family. If they can accept it and life goes on, should we, as outsiders, impose our judgement and demand a resignation?

Having said that, any responsible person (who I believe all our Cabinet members are) caught in that situation will offer to resign no matter what the public opinion is.

I raised the same scenario during a gathering with friends. Coincidently, the guys share my view while all the ladies could not accept it. And I did highlight that the subject could be a man or woman!

Wonder if this is a gender-specific point of view?
