Car owners drove less last year
LTA annual report shows traffic on expressways eased, cars achieved better mileageBy Christopher Tan
RISING fuel prices helped put the brakes on driving in Singapore last year, new Government data suggests.
The average car owner covered 20,840km last year, about 1 per cent less than in 2006, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Based on Singapore’s car population of about 500,000, that works out to a cumulative cutback of 116.5 million km.This came as pump prices jumped almost 50 cents a litre - or roughly one third - between January and December last year.
The numbers were contained in the LTA’s 2007 annual report, which The Straits Times received yesterday. The report also revealed that Singapore’s expressways flowed more freely than they did the year before.
Just over 97 per cent of expressways experienced average speeds of above 45kmh during the morning rush hour in January this year, up from 93 per cent in the same month last year. In the evenings, 97 per cent of expressways hit the 45kmh range, a slight improvement over the previous year.
But conditions on main roads were not as rosy, with the percentage of streets that saw speeds over 20kmh falling slightly to 97 per cent during the morning peak period and 94 per cent in the evening.
Meanwhile, Singapore drivers seem to be getting better mileage.
The average small car (with an engine of up to 1,600cc) consumed 9.6 litres per 100km last year, while big cars (above 1,600cc) used 12 litres per 100km. These were the best economy figures recorded in recent years.
The LTA’s road-building programme has been picking up speed in recent years too, according to its annual report.
Last year, 718 km of new lanes were added, the most in five years and double the length built in 2003.
Observers reckon that may explain why traffic remained relatively free-flowing despite a record 6.5 per cent increase in vehicles last year, bringing the total to more than 851,000.
A further $54 billion worth of projects are planned over the next 10 to 15 years as part of the Land Transport Master Plan - Singapore’s roadmap to a commuter-centred system that will see new MRT lines, more bus services and an expanded road network.
LTA chairman Michael Lim said the authority will engage the private sector in the ambitious roll-out.
‘We have already begun to reach out to regional companies and professionals who are keen to participate in Singapore’s land transport infrastructure expansion,’ he said, without giving details.
For the financial year ended March 2008, the LTA posted a net surplus of $37 million, down from $44 million the previous year. This was largely on the back of higher operating expenditure and a dip in government grants.
Like what the forummer said, the graph’s legend said “less than 45kmh”, but the article said “above 45kmh”. Same goes to the other paragraph. I am confused. Is it the reporter don’t know how to read graph? Or something is wrong with the graph itself?

15-Year-Old Hates Singapore
Can someone help him?
And im 15. I hate the way people operate around here. I hate the system. I want to get out of the system. But how?
Lets just say, school here is a waste of time in my honest opinion. I mean, they teach you stuff that you dont need to know, like trigometry, algebra, which dont help at life at all. Chem, physics, do you need those at all? Plus, school takes up like 7 hours at least here. Don’t we teens need time to engage at other sports or activities? Normally after school i’d be drained and too tired to do anything at all! But i do agree that languages are important, perhaps literature(it really lets u think deep, matures kids faster, well at least, to me). The basic maths and sciences all that are needed mostly, as we dont measure buildings or create new chemicals in our free time! Perhaps people could opt for better subjects when they want, like a “upgrade” or a stepping stone to a career path they wish for. School is too much for kiddies and teenies already. Want us to be fit but also want us to study so damn much. Its like asking a beggar for money.
NS, one more god-damn stuff all males gotta go through. And its a must. Wasting 2 years and subsequent weeks years after isnt what i opt for. I rather work my ass off and get proper money. Fitness isnt an issue, anyone can get themselves fit if they want to! Defending Singapore, reasonable, but 2 ****ing years is too much, how long do u need to learn how to kill(Or whatever they do inside). They say they want to bond men in NS, yeah, for **** sake, what happens after NS, they forget each other! I studied in S.S that NS also plays apart for our multi-racial society, bull****, from what i learn, I even find adults being more immature then me.
And foreign workers, aint there too much of them? I mean, i dont mind some, but, i see them everywhere!
Sorry, ive got this wall of text, but i gotta let em all out. I’m closing in depression already, thinking of how to get out of this damn country after poly. Singapore makes me blame my parents for not wearing a condom. What are your views?
EDIT: Ok, sorry for not stating this, but i only welcome sincere discussion, not dissin. I just want to see what are your views. Really.
The War Between Amit Nagpal And Sg Netizens

You know who Amit Nagpal is? You should know it by know. Amit is the Singapore PR who wrote in to Straits Times Forum, asking that Singapore government should allow Singapore PR to purchase new HDB at subsidized rate as well, just like Singapore citizens.
Immediately, his letter was hotly discussed in many Singapore forums, including EDMW of HWZ. Many forumers expressed their views, many cursed and swore, and many left rather bad words in that thread. Some even searched for “Amit Nagpal” in Google, and digged out all his information, including his personal homepage, the company that he is working with, photos of him and family, ect. Amit demanded Admin of HWZ to remove that thread, and it was granted. But someone posted a link to the cached version of that thread again. Amit consulted Admin of HWZ, and he was advised to make police report and take action against the forumer. This made some people rather angry……

Young Lady Died In Car Accident, News Reporter Cooked Up Story?

I saw this thread in HWZ EDMW. It is regarding a 19-yo young, pretty lady, who was killed in a fatal car accident on 19th July. Someone was reading her blog. And through the link on her blog, we saw that her good friend was actually accusing reporter from local press for cooking the story. This is what the friend wrote:

They wrote they believe both of them are couple. MY FOOT. It is just their assumption. They’re just normal friend. Yet?! THEY WRITE IT AS IF IT’S THE TRUTH!
What’s worst?! NONE of the family member spoke to the reporter yet the newspaper can say that they interviewed her elder sis?! WHAT THE HELL?!
They took wen’s pictures from the net and post it on the paper. It’s like, hey, people have already GONE, why can’t you let the family have peace?! GO TO HELL!
Did the reporter really interview the family but the friend just happened to be not aware of it? Or it is really that bad that those reporters have to cook up the story themselves? If it is the latter, that is pathetic. Thumb down to you, whoever wrote that reports.
(If a car was going at 60km/h, would it “skid and turn a few rounds”? Hmmmm, seems like someone is lying…… )
